Chapter Thirteen

Malcolm parked his truck by the barn, and rested his arms on the steering wheel. He let his gaze roam over the entire area. He’d decided to search the areas where they’d tracked the scent once again and see if they could pick up any trace of the scent blocker. Greer was out at the field where they’d located Donald’s body, and Brody was at the Cummings’ ranch under the guise of taking some pictures to close out the file. Davis was back at the cave to do another search.

It was an overcast day, and the forecast called for rain this afternoon and evening. Any lingering evidence was likely to be washed away. He exited his truck and checked the ground for any signs someone else had visited the Ames farm recently, but there were no new tire tracks or footprints, man or animal.

Walking a perimeter around the old house foundation and barn produced nothing. He headed for the barn.

The scent hit him as he approached the doors.

Strong and fresh, it assailed his nostrils.

He stepped back to the side of the door and searched what he could see of the inside for movement, while he started texting the others of his findings. Nothing moved inside the barn. Only the sound of the breeze whistling through the tall grass reached his ears.

A quick glance down at the vibration of his phone showed the others were on their way. He wasn’t about to wait.

Malcolm sidled into the barn in a smooth glide and stood with his back against the rough wall as he scanned the interior. His eyes adjusted quickly to the dim lighting, but nothing caught his attention. He weighed the choice of changing and flying up to the loft, or hauling himself up like last time. Both left him open for attack if the murderer lay in wait in the loft where Malcolm couldn’t see completely. Shifting left him less vulnerable for a shorter period of time.

Watching the loft, and listening for any movement, he stripped off his clothes. He considered shifting with them on and shredding them in the process, but his instincts weren’t screaming imminent danger.

The scent remained strong, but the loft was most likely empty. They had probably spent the night and left.

The shift was accomplished in the blink of an eye. He opened his wings and shoved off the ground in a surge of movement. He flew straight up to the loft, wanting to get a glimpse before his flight disturbed anything.

A small pale form lay curled up in a ball in the corner of the loft, completely nude.

At first, he thought it a child, but as he looked closer he realized it was a woman.

She was petite, and her skin uncommonly pale.

He searched the loft thoroughly with all his senses and found nothing.

Malcolm surged forward and landed softly on the edge of the loft. The old wood groaned under his weight, but held strong.

She hadn’t moved or made a sound.

Pale blonde hair covered her head, hiding her face.
